20 Point Director’s Safety Checklist

The Risk & Safety Consultancy group has developed a “20 Point Director’s Safety Checklist” that provides guidance to directors on how they could discharge their responsibilities, in a manner that differentiates their role from that of management. The checklist provides a list of questions directors should be able to answer or, be seeking responses to.

  1. Do you know how your organisation is performing on safety matters?
  2. Do you know whether you comply with safety legislation?
  3. Do you know if there are any prosecutions, prohibitions  or pending WorkCover activity?
  4. Are you safer now than five years ago?
  5. Will your workplace be safer in five years from now and how do you know ?
  6. Did you participate in the development of Safety/Risk Policy?
  7. Have you set challenging safety objectives?
  8. Are there stringent performance monitoring regimes underpinning objectives?
  9. Does the organisational structure reflect the importance of safety?
  10. Are safety accountabilities set at all levels?
  11. Are you satisfied the executive team are managing safety?
  12. Is safety (and injury management) incorporated in performance agreements and reviews?
  13. Is safety considered during policy development and strategic planning?
  14. Do you understand the financial arrangements for workers compensation?
  15. Are safety costs and compensation delegated to cost centres to reinforce accountability?
  16. Is there a clearly defined safety plan and compliance monitoring processes?
  17. Do you regularly communicate the importance of safety at all levels?
  18. Are you promptly advised of safety incidents?
  19. Are there mechanisms in place to benchmark performance and share information?
  20. Are there effective mechanisms in place to consult with all affected stakeholders?
